A passion for "Kasabu"

(Shirhan and me posing for a selfie on Tuesday night at Faruma Festival)

Meet Aishath Shirhan, one of the local experts in the dying traditional embroidery that is "Kasabu".

She has a stall at the Faruma Festival at the Social Centre in Male', which was opened for the public on Tuesday and concludes next Saturday. The opening hours are 1 pm to 6 pm, and 8 pm to 11 pm. Entrance is free.

Shirhan has expanded her "art" not only to Maldivian women's traditional "libaas" dress but also to a host of other accessories such as handbags, purses, dolls, and souvenirs, etc. No wonder that even resorts are inviting her to showcase her talents to tourists.

(Shirhan informs and interacts with visitors to her stall at Faruma Festival on Tuesday night)

Many people have benefited from her because she is keen on passing her talent and teach anyone who is interested.

Shirhan is a relative of mine, and also my classmate in higher secondary education at the Science Education Centre (SEC) which is now known as Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE).

It's great to know that some are trying to revive these dying traditional arts but sad to see the people who are trying are becoming so few.
