MOVIE REVIEW: "Twisters" is another strong cinematic event of 2024

Hands down "Twisters" is one of the best cinematic experiences of this year alongside "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga".

I and a relative managed to watch "Twisters"'s Maldives' premier show last Friday night at 8.30 pm from Schwack's hall in Hulhumale. It was worth it just for the sound alone on 7.1 Dolby Surround system. In fact, "Twisters" deserves an Oscar nomination for sound itself; I felt I was right in the middle of the tornados.

"Twisters" is actually not a direct sequel to "Twister" (1996). It's a  standalone sequel.

Here's a breakdown:

New Story and Characters: "Twisters" features a completely new cast and story compared to the original film. It follows a new generation of storm chasers with their own motivations and challenges.

Thematic Connection: Both movies focus on the intensity and danger of tornadoes, the thrill of storm chasing, and the use of technology to study these weather phenomena.

Not a Reboot or Remake: While "Twisters" shares the core theme of tornadoes, it's not a complete retelling of the 1996 story. It builds upon the original film's world but doesn't directly continue its plot.

So, if you're looking for a continuation of Bill and Jo Harding's story, "Twisters" won't offer that. But it does capture the essence of storm chasing and the awe-inspiring power of nature in a fresh way.

Here are the salient points of "Twisters":

Storm Chasing: The film centers around storm chasers, a group of people who actively pursue tornadoes to collect data. It highlights the thrill and danger involved in this pursuit.

Doppler Project: A central plot point revolves around a project developing a network of advanced weather monitoring stations called D.O.R.A. (Doppler On Wheels Research Array). The protagonists believe this data can predict tornado behavior, while others see it as a profit-driven venture.

Devastating Tornadoes: The movie features impressive special effects depicting powerful and destructive tornadoes wreaking havoc on towns and landscapes.

Science vs. Profit: The film explores the conflict between scientific research aiming to understand and predict tornadoes, versus commercial interests focused on exploiting the data for profit.
