The Magistrate's Court in Naifaru island of Lhaviyani atoll released the suspects on 15 May 2023, after they were arrested with drugs, according to a Maldivian native Dhivehi language report by local media outlet Mihaaru the next day.
Mihaaru stated that the operation was conducted in response to concerns about drug pushers on the island.
Six individuals were arrested, drugs were found in their residences, and five tested positive. However, they were released by the court due to not being in possession of drugs at the time of arrest.
The issue of drug abuse, including among children, prompted a special operation, but the island's council has not commented. Some institutions on the island expressed concern and called for action.
