... Take the case of ‘gondudhoh’ / ‘athirimathi’ for instance.

In a country that depends entirely on its beaches for its income you’d expect the words for beach to be evocative of pleasant feelings and sensations. But here we have ‘athiriyah dhiyun’ (open defecation on the beach from the days when we expected waves to wash off our waste and crows and scavenging crabs to clean up after we were done with our business) and ‘gondu’ from the time when we thought of our beaches as giant garbage dumps that the big ocean would clean up.
