MP Jabir and 2,000 years of Maldives' profanity

NOTE: Please first read the English news item in "The Edition" newspaper titled, Jabir abusive towards crew, Maldivian to take action.

Yesterday I just clicked a 4-minute video a friend sent me. I listened to Kaashidhoo constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Abdulla Jabir stomping on a seaplane platform and his harsh voice as he almost scared the crew of a seaplane out of their skin.

I think there is nothing more quintessentially Dhivehi (Maldives' native language) than authentic Dhivehi "awaguraanu" (profanity) in Jabir’s voice. It should be recorded & saved as an important part of our cultural heritage. Tsk tsk "pis pis". It should be protected at the Maldives' National Archives.

Dhivehi language is so exceptionally rich in "awaguraanu".

How did that happen?

I’ve heard, Arabic, it seems have more than 100 different words for dates but just one word for solid ice. Innuits have over a 100 words for ice but just one (probably recently coined) for dates.

People have words for things they often think of - for a long period of time.

"Mushimas" (mackerels) were always in abundance, just a few feet away from the shoreline across the Maldives archipelago. Some days you don’t even have to wade into the lagoon to catch them. The "muda-handhi" (giant trevally) attacks would put thousands of mushimas on the beach. Your lunch came to you with no effort on your part.

So what do you do when you sit on a "holhuashi" (large bench made out of coconut trunks) by the beach for 2,000 years? What do you think of?

You do what is natural. Think, talk & do sex. You develop it as an art form. You devise ingenious ways of insulting people around you in a fun way: 2,000 years of that. The result is the most diverse & perfectly suited lexicon of awaguraanus in the entire world.

Heck, it should be sent on the next Voyager mission out of our Solar System. If we could do that with Beethoven & Chuck Berry, why not with Jabir?

Since sex is the most strong drive in all living things, perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that the profanity immediately associated itself with that of the private parts humans have an extraordinary fascination with: the most "beautiful" organs which are the genitalia.

Some say Jabir is not alright. They say it looks like he has been affected by so many traumas and never got healed. Maybe.

We could be mentally retarded if all the thousands of people who sat on those holhuashis by the beach, throughout those 2000 years, mostly thought and talked of one of the most lowest animalistic desires and focused mainly on developing their vocabulary of profane words instead of marvelling, admiring or immersing themselves in the great natural beauty surrounding them. It is a sad situation if we cannot let the beauty and marvels we see around us transform us into remembering or recognising the greatness of their Creator who produced such natural beauty and allow such thoughts to increase our piety and make us refrain from doing what is hated in Islam.

If we don't ignore the religious aspect of using profanity, having a language rich in auguraana and admiring who uses it a lot is nothing to be proud about.
