You can always count on India actor Ayushmann Khurrana to play Hindi oddball movies; Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui is no exception.
This time around, he plays the role of a character called Manvinder, a bodybuilder who meets Maanvi, a Zumba instructor, played by Vaani Kapoor.
It was much later after they got a strong relationship going between them that he comes to know she is a transgender woman.
As usual when people have to grapple with things they don’t understand, we see Manvinder facing a hard time with the issue of transgenderism where he is even shown to be watching graphical illustrations of gender affirming surgery on YouTube. I suppose this would be interesting to those who are wondering why transgenderism is making a loud noise in the "West" right now.
Manvinder feels a sort of betrayal from Maanvi although she tried to inform him beforehand; nevertheless he seeks to create a distance between him and her.
After all the “drama”, in the end, he starts to feel an inexplicable sense of loss and emptiness, and chooses to resume his “friendship” with her on the basis that he "misses" her very much.
There was criticism why the filmmakers did not choose an actual transgender woman to play the role Vaani played although her performance was praised as exceptional. I guess as long as you are talented, there should not be any problem, if you have the merit to pull off the role, that is.
