NOTE TO HILATH: Why are Maldives’ newspapers afraid of their advertisers?

Dear friend,

Recently, there have been significant disruptions to the services provided by various advertisers who sponsor advertisements on multiple Maldivian news websites. Surprisingly, these disruptions have gone unreported in the news. One may wonder why.

The underlying truth can be attributed to the shortcomings and, in some cases, the sinister aspects of capitalism and its free market economics. In such a system, even the newspapers, considered the fourth pillar of democracy, struggle to maintain their independence and report the truth.

The primary reason for this is the newspapers' heavy reliance on advertisers' funds for their survival. Without the financial support from advertisers, newspapers cannot sustain themselves or afford to pay their journalists, which are essential for keeping the newspapers operational. This unfortunate situation leaves little room for escape.

Similar distressing scenarios can be witnessed in other countries as well. For instance, powerful industries often impede the enactment of crucial legislation aimed at addressing climate change.

Regrettably, all of us are complicit in the destruction of our society and environment. The collective impact of our actions is undeniable, and it seems that we are rapidly heading towards a bleak future.

Sincerely yours,
XX
