When a Maldivian man's love for his 4 wives overflows...

First there was Maldives' super model Kaizeen whose birthday was recently marked with fireworks attracting criticism from some who said that the funds could have been more usefully spent if given away for charity.

Now comes the case of a Maldivian who spent MVR 50,000 (USD 3,242) to hold an exclusive screening of the Maldivian movie "Loabi Vevijje” at Olympus Theatre in the capital Male’ City on Tuesday night for his four wives. Like the Kaizeen controversy, this man has also come under fire for "wasting" money on entertainment rather than helping the disadvantaged.

While some Maldivians are of the view that people have a right to seek personal pleasure, others are of the view that a 100% Islamic nation of devote Sunni Muslims should not spend money on extravaganzas. Hence, the criticism.

The Maldivian newspaper "Dhauru"'s movie critic, lifestyle, and entertainment writer Ahmed Nadym reported that only a total 3 people attended this "private show" although the husband, who was not identified, invited his 4 wives.

He stated that only 2 wives out of the 4 accepted the husband's invitation and therefore only "3 people" were in attendance to view the movie described as an "erotic thriller" by “Dhauru” but as a "Maldivian romantic film" by Wikipedia.

Muslim men are allowed to have 4 wives at any given time.

"This made the 7th show 'houseful' without it been actually houseful", Nadym reported.

"This is the first time such an event occurred in Maldives' cinema history," he went on to say.

He cited one of the movie's producers Shaniz Ali as saying that anybody is free to buy a private show.

According to Shaniz, a houseful show generates MVR 62,000 (USD 4,020).

He said that the movie, directed and acted by Ali Seezan, cost a high MVR 800,000 (USD 51,880) because production had to be halted with the onset of the pandemic resulting in delay of the movie's release.

A ticket costs MVR 150 (USD 9) and arrangements are underway for screening in other islands.

"Already 55 islands have registered for screenings. Hopefully we can start the screenings in those islands in June," Shaniz was quoted as saying.
