Ostrich found living in a Maldives' home

The Agriculture Ministry has started "investigating" the case of an ostrich been kept at a home, the local newspaper "Mihaaru" reported on Tuesday.

In a Maldives' native Dhivehi language report, the newspaper cited the ministry as saying that permission was given to keep the ostrich at a bird farm and not at a home.

The case came to light when a photograph of the 5-foot tall bird hit the social media.

The ministry's Executive Director Nasrulla Hussain told "Mihaaru" that there were previous cases when the ministry permitted such birds to be kept at bird farms.

A photo of the license was also circulated on social media which indicated that the permission was given in January last year to eggs of 50 domestic ostriches imported from Iran.

"Mihaaru" concluded the report by stating that the newspaper is informed that currently there are 10 ostriches been kept in the Maldives.
