Local newspaper outlet "Mihaaru" on Tuesday night quoted Prisons Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu as saying that an attempt to smuggle in drugs to Ahseyri prison in Hihmafushi island of North Male' atoll using drones have been foiled.
The high-tech crime attempt was made on Tuesday morning and the staff of the prison came to know about it and foiled the attempt, Ahmed tweeted, according to "Mihaaru".
The items that were about to be smuggled in were 5 "bullets" of drugs weighing 29 grams - along with 5 SIM cards.
In a Maldivian native Dhivehi language report, "Mihaaru" stated it was not clear if anybody has been arrested in connection with the attempted crime - at the time when the newspaper reported this news.
There were previous cases of drug abuse in prison and officers are conducting "programs" to bring the practice to an end, "Mihaaru" concluded in its report.
I condemn hypocrisy in all its forms
