Naifaru submerged for 3 hours due to heavy rainfall

Continuous rainfall in the Maldives has resulted in flooding on Naifaru Island in Lhaviyani Atoll, according to a Maldivian native Dhivehi language report by local media outlet Mihaaru.

According to Naifaru Council President Mohamed Rasheed, the rain started at dawn and ceased around 7:00 am on Sunday morning.

Rasheed stated that the entire island was flooded once the rain stopped. Some houses have been affected, rendering certain rooms unusable. The residents, along with the council and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), are collaborating to drain the water from the affected houses.

Since 6:30 am, the MNDF has been working to remove water from the roads of Naifaru. Pumps have been deployed in two areas of the island to facilitate the drainage process.

The Maldives is currently experiencing the Southwest monsoon season, and the Meteorological Office has issued an "alert" from Lhaviyani Atoll to Meemu Atoll, warning of the possibility of heavy rains.
