A 29-year-old Maldivian man was apprehended on Saturday for growing marijuana plants at a house in the capital Male' City, "Vaguthu" news website reported on Monday.

"Mihaaru" newspaper identified him as Ahmed Yasih from Kendhikolhu of Kendhikulhudhoo island in Noonu atoll.

Mihaaru said that the plants were found from a house in Galolhu ward.

Vaguthu said that a court order stated that "Yasih had arrived at the site when police were on the scene and admitted that the suspected marijuana plant was his".

The court order had gone on to say that Yasih had told the police that he had marijuana plants on his balcony as well and that he will cooperate with the police investigation, according to Vaguthu.

He had signed and fingerprinted a statement which stated that he would allow police to conduct a search of his house premises, the newspaper quoted the court order as saying.

However, later at the court he had retracted his confession and said that he had not given permission for police to conduct the search, Vaguthu reported.

He had told the court that police "tortured" him and "vandalized" his property, the newspaper said.

However, taking into account the "evidence" that Maldives Police Service (MPS) produced, the court ruled that he had been arrested "according to proper procedures", Vaguthu reported.

The Criminal Court had remanded him for 15 days, Vaguthu stated.

Police is accusing him of narcotics possession and trafficking it, according to Vaguthu.

The newspaper concluded its report claiming that there were previous instances where police seized marijuana plants from other islands as well.
