India implements citizenship law opposed by Muslims before election

India moved on Monday to implement a 2019 citizenship law that has been criticised as discriminating against Muslims, weeks before Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeks a rare third term for his Hindu nationalist government.

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) grants Indian nationality to Hindus, Parsis, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Christians who fled to Hindu-majority India due to religious persecution from Muslim-majority Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan before Dec. 31, 2014. READ MORE FROM REUTERS

How do you differentiate an ochlocracy from democracy?

There is no defined & fool-proof way to do that.

Democracy even by definition is mob rule. Democracy & ochlocracy are one & the same thing. πŸ€” No?

In democracies like India, Maldives & elsewhere, we are seeing the impairment of the civil process & the eroding of of the purported powers of the entire polity with virtual impunity by the majority mob.

India is a democracy. And Indians are 80% Hindus. It is only natural that the Hindu mob would rule that country.

We often forget that no Maldivian ever wants to give any space in the Maldives for a non-sunni Muslim. Hindu Indians are simply claiming for themselves that same right they believe is fair & justified.

    Any thoughts?

You are right. Everyone thinks they are right and they feel divinely empowered to make others suffer.

    2. Unless we are civilized enough to accept that people who have different opinions from us have a right to live, democracy may always remain a rule of the majority mob.
