MOVIE REVIEW: 'Christy' - an exquisite unrequited true love story shot in Maldives' Dhangethi and Maamigili islands

'Christy' is an Indian Malayalam language film that explores the intricacies of unrequited love and the societal pressures faced by young women and men.

It is one of those rare Indian movies which dare to explore the "dangerous" love that blossoms between people with a great age gap. In this case, 'Christy' is a true story about a student falling hopelessly in love with a teacher who is also a divorcee.

The film revolves around Christy, a young woman who is deeply in love with Roy, a local boy. However, their relationship is complicated by societal norms and Roy's own insecurities.

There is one big glaring mistake in the movie, if it could be called that, but I forgive that because 'Christy' evokes the kind of nostalgia I enjoyed when watching poignant Iranian arthouse movies such as 'Baran'. The big mistake is that the movie made only a few attempts to show Christy's point of view when it came to rejecting Roy's love for her.

I like the fact that as a Christian woman, Christy defied her community's expectations and divorced her husband with whom she had an undesired arranged marriage.

The film's visuals and score and soundtrack are totally out of this world! Their beauty and evocative nature captures the serene atmosphere of rural Kerala.

Overall, 'Christy' is a poignant exploration of love, loss, and the challenges faced by young people in a society that often restricts their choices.

The climax, and the very ending scene, is totally heart-breaking as credits roll proclaiming it is a true story.
