Maldives' capital Male' - no island for pedestrians?

Curiously now, we don't see traffic police giving traffic tickets anymore.

The result? Scooters and four-wheeled vehicles park wherever they want, even around the corners of streets, preventing pedestrians who walk on the pavement, from crossing to the other side of the street because the road is blocked by scooters and they don't have a space to squeeze through and cross to the other side of the street. They have to go back all the way to the start of the block they entered the pavement from.

This has resulted in many pedestrians choosing to walk on the road itself whether there's traffic or not. This is dangerous but what choice do they have? Why isn't President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's government addressing this critical issue?

Some pedestrians take the side of the street from where the traffic moves towards them so that they can see and dodge the vehicles. Sometimes angry drivers honk if a pedestrian is moving with his or her back to the direction where the vehicles are coming from. What choice is left for the poor pedestrians?
