Canadian director James Cameron is releasing his classics in 4K.
When I heard that, I just couldn't wait and instead this week watched "True Lies" HD version because I was reminded of a time when I didn't understand the movie and told a Maldivian friend, who had liked it, that I didn't like it.
The truth is I have a problem in understanding spoken English in some cases: I caught all the dialogues of the British movie "Notting Hill" which I watched 4 times at the cinema when I was studying for my first degree in Malaysia.
But the American movie "Avatar: The Way of Water" at Schwack's Hulhumale cinema hall was an unfortunate experience where I couldn't catch most of the dialogue and passed a wrong judgement in a negative review to which I made a public apology later after watching it with subtitles.
Needless to say, I sat for the CPE (Cambridge Proficiency in English) exam for 2 consecutive years and both times I managed to get only a "C" pass: I am assuming I didn't do well in the "listening" and "interview" components.
A friend asked me whether the problem is that I can't catch English dialogues due to varying accents and dialects. Could be. Idk. I didn't understand a word of the British movie "Snatch" while I understood the whole dialogue of the Australian movie "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert".
Anyways, this week I watched "True Lies" in HD with subtitles and I finally realized my friend was right to declare that it is a good action comedy.
And not only that, the visual effects was a landmark event at the time and even today the action scenes' choreography (with Cameron's "Titanic"'s Oscar-winning cinematographer Russell Carpenter) seems timeless.
I am sure I will revisit "True Lies" again after watching some movies that need to be immediately watched before this year's Oscar awards.
