Today is both World Human Rights Day and Maldives Fisherman's Day

World Human Rights Day

The theme for Human Rights Day 2023 is "Freedom, Equality and Justice for All".

On Saturday, Maldives Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef arrived in Switzerland on an official visit to participate in the High Level Event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Human Rights 75) to be held in Geneva from 11-12 December 2023.

World Human Rights Day is observed annually on December 10th. This date commemorates the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The declaration serves as a foundational document outlining the fundamental rights and freedoms to which all people are entitled. Each year, Human Rights Day is an opportunity to promote and advocate for the protection of human rights worldwide.

The UDHR was officially proclaimed as a common standard of rights and freedoms for all people, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, religion, or any other status. The declaration was a response to the atrocities and violations of human rights witnessed during World War II and aimed to establish a universal framework for the protection of human rights.

The key purposes of observing Human Rights Day include:

Promotion of Universal Values: Human Rights Day serves as a reminder of the shared principles and values articulated in the UDHR. It emphasizes the universality of human rights and the idea that these rights apply to everyone, everywhere.

Advocacy and Awareness: The day is an opportunity to raise awareness about human rights issues globally. It provides a platform for individuals, organizations, and governments to speak out against human rights abuses, discrimination, and injustices.

Education and Empowerment: Human Rights Day encourages education about human rights and empowers people to stand up for their own rights and the rights of others. It promotes understanding, tolerance, and respect for the dignity of every individual.

Global Solidarity: By observing Human Rights Day, the international community expresses solidarity in the pursuit of justice, equality, and human dignity. It encourages collaboration and cooperation to address challenges related to human rights on a global scale.

Accountability and Justice: The day is an occasion to call for accountability for human rights violations and to seek justice for victims. It encourages governments, organizations, and individuals to take responsibility for upholding and protecting human rights.

Human Rights Day is not only a moment to reflect on the progress made in the promotion and protection of human rights but also an opportunity to acknowledge the work that still needs to be done to address ongoing challenges and violations worldwide. The theme for Human Rights Day often changes each year, focusing on specific issues or rights that require attention and action.

Maldives Fisherman's Day

Maldives Fisherman's Day is observed on December 10th each year.

Maldives' Fisherman's Day is observed to honor and celebrate the contributions of the fishing community to the nation's economy and culture. Fishing is a vital industry in the Maldives, and a significant portion of the population depends on it for their livelihood. The day is dedicated to recognizing the hard work, dedication, and resilience of fishermen who play a crucial role in sustaining the country's fishing industry.

The celebration often includes various events, ceremonies, and activities that highlight the importance of the fishing sector. It also serves as an occasion to raise awareness about the challenges faced by fishermen, such as environmental issues, sustainability concerns, and the impact of climate change on marine resources.

Fisherman's Day provides an opportunity for the Maldivian people to come together, express gratitude to the fishing community, and promote the importance of sustainable fishing practices for the future well-being of the country.

Maldives' President Dr Mohamed Muizzu yesterday highlighted that the new Administration has successfully settled the outstanding payments owed to the fishermen by the previous Administration within the first three weeks of taking office. He further stated that the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, in collaboration with the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Ltd (MIFCO) and the Ministry of Finance, is diligently working towards disbursing the remaining MVR140 million in pending payments to the fishermen. Speaking at the 'Masveringe Gunzaru 2023' forum, Ahmed Shiyam, the Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, stated that the President would announce significant decisions at the forthcoming official Fisherman's Day function based on the discussions held at the forum.

The Ministry and MIFCO co-hosted on Friday a "MIFCO Children's Event" on the occasion of the 43rd Fishermen's Day of Maldives.
