When the blocking of anti-government news websites and the new Maldives' government's declaration of its intention of carrying out capital punishment came about within a course of a week or so, I sought to seek the opinion of a grass-roots pro-government retired senior citizen.

"This is a government which is trying to uphold Islam. It is possible that Islamic Shariah law may not be implemented in Maldives due to foreign and domestic pressure. But there's no excuse not to try. We have to be involved in reform until our death. Therefore, in reality, newspapers and people working against this Islamic government amounts to actually working against Islam. Hence, they have to be given the death penalty. And we have to shut down such newspapers. Furthermore, such newspapers are disseminating fake news. Spreading of false information is sinful. It must be brought to a stop. Therefore, those newspapers must be shut down."
Ever since the "Islamic Revolution", the Iran government claims it is engaged in sustaining an Islamic government. Under that pretext, Iran has put to death people who are anti-government.
