Ocean Puffer and Frigate Tuna's "fatal" difference

A late relative was overly cautious when it came to buying fresh fish from the local market because the Ocean Puffer was poisonous and could be life-threatening.

This meme was doing the Maldives social media rounds recently. So I thought I will blog about it.

The source cited is "Ibrahim's post".

It says that the two species are not related at all and that the similar sounding name may have been given by our Maldivian ancestors because they look similar.

One is the...

...Oceanic Puffer fish (Raagondi Koli in Maldives native language):

Its length is up to 61 cm. It is thought to be responsible for fatal poisoning and should therefore not be eaten.

The oceanic puffer, sci-name: Lagocephalus lagocephalus (meaning "rabbit head"), is a pufferfish of the family Tetraodontidae, found in all tropical and subtropical oceans, at depths of between 10 and 475 m.

Though indigenous to the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans as well as the Sea of Japan, a surge in its distribution throughout the Mediterranean Sea has been reported in years of recent.

The other is the...

...Frigate Tuna (Raagondi in Dhivehi):

The frigate tuna, frigate mackerel or alagaduwa (Auxis thazard) is a species of tuna, in the family Scombridae, found around the world in tropical oceans.

The eastern Pacific population is now regarded as a separate species by some authorities, Auxis brachydorax.
