Me on Viber: "Any idea why Male' City Council is recently 'trimming' branches of many 'Ofi Eley' trees by cutting off them?"A friend: "Kadhuru ruh jahan vegen ethaa kairi". (Translation: "To plant date palms near there.")
Me:
"Oh. I guess it's better than cutting down the 'Ofi Eley' trees
altogether. I was a bit worried they were going to get rid of all the
"Ofi Eley' altogether. Despite Meemu Zaviyani's objections, 'Ofi Eley'
provides a lot of shade."
To myself later: "Well, Meemu
Zaviyani had a valid point at the time when the government started
planting 'Ofi Eley' trees all over the capital Male' City. One of his
major concerns at that time was, if there was a disease that struck 'Ofi
Eley', it will spread through the whole of Male' and kill all the trees
and then our concrete jungle would become barren and truly resemble,
well, a complete concrete jungle. So, Meemu Zaviyani was right".
Why do we need to harbour such ominous thoughts for the future of those trees? Are date palms immune to such diseases?
ReplyDeleteI guess the trees are being trimmed because the branches are prone to break in very high gusty winds which would damage people's propertybor maybe hurt people.
I guess all flora and fauna are susceptible to disease.
DeleteYou are right that heavy winds have been found to break branches and even uproot trees.
