Three Maldivian men have been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of Naeema Moosa, a 62-year-old woman who was found dead on Manadhoo island of Noonu atoll last month, according to local media outlets.

The third suspect was arrested in Maldives' capital Male' City but there were no further details.

Naeema, who lived alone, was reported missing after failing to show up for work. Police discovered her lifeless body with multiple stab wounds after forcibly entering her house when two days passed without her showing up for work. It is suspected that she was murdered while asleep.

A post-mortem examination was not conducted before her burial.

Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed tweeted that the two knives used in Naeema's murder, as well as the clothing worn by the two perpetrators, were recovered from a hole on the beach which were found burned. This recovery was based on information provided by two suspects who were arrested in relation to the case.

One of the suspects, 23-year-old Ahzam Abdul Shakoor, confessed to the murder when he appeared before the magistrate court in connection with a drug-related offense. The court remanded him for 14 days regarding the possession of 56.1 grams of drugs found in his room.

The other suspect, a 20-year-old named Rifaash, was arrested separately and has been remanded for five days, with the opportunity to appoint an attorney.

Both suspects have a history of drug use and trafficking, with Ahzam previously being indicted for possession of dangerous weapons.

Naeema's body was found with stab wounds to the neck, as well as multiple wounds throughout her body.

According to the police, DNA and other forensic evidence were collected at the crime scene. Although samples were taken from approximately 600 island residents for DNA and fingerprint analysis, the results are pending.

The motive for Naeema's murder remains unclear. A resident of Manadhoo stated that she earned approximately MVR 5,000 (USD 324) as a sweeper, suggesting that money was not a motive for her killing.

Abdul Rahman Sobeeh, President of the Manadhoo Council, confirmed the arrests but did not provide specific details as the investigation was ongoing. However, he stated that the arrests and the gathering of evidence after two months brought some relief to the island's residents.

"While many believe that there is more to be uncovered in this case, the progress made in the investigation is quite satisfactory," he said.
