The 'other' side of the Maldives you don't see on Instagram

... "So apparently it's a major politician in the Maldives who owns this island and construction got underway 12 years ago," Mr Brock said in the video. "They were building for two years then for 'political reasons' - we don't really know, ostensibly maybe they ran out of money - they've literally abandoned the project."

... Speaking to Escape, Mr Brock added that the creepiest part about the island (besides the generator room and the "ten million mosquitoes that call the island home") were the staff accommodations "that had clearly been lived in for a long time, but looked like they had been hastily abandoned at some point when people stopped getting paid from the owner of the island."

... Out Chasing Stars appear to have visited either the same or a similar resort to Mr Brock, writing "The project was slated to be finished with a grand opening in 2011... However, someone defaulted on the loan" and "We arrived to find the buildings in total disrepair."

... TikTok user @visiteverycountry has also shared footage of an abandoned resort in the Maldives with their followers, telling them, "You  don't see that on Instagram." Beneath their video, one commenter claimed that what @visiteverycountry was looking at was a would-be resort called Asdhoo Resort and "It was abandoned [be]cause of a disagreement between the two owners."
