Local "Mihaaru" newspaper on Thursday reported that over the past 9 years, the local population increased by 44,000 while the expat populace increased doublefold.
The
number of Maldivians now total 382,751 according to the latest census
results disclosed on Thursday. This is an increase of 44,317 Maldivians
over the 2014 figure.
Accordingly, the whole population of
Maldives - both Maldivians and expats included - now stand at more than
half a million, or exactly 515,122.
This amounts to 26% of expats
or more than 132,000 which is twofold the number of expats recorded in
the last census conducted in 2014 when the then expat population was
recorded at 63,000.
Now the number of expats working in resort
islands and industrial zones amount to more than 70%, which is one expat
for every 3 Maldivians.
The most recent census also shows that for every 100 Maldivian women, there are 104 Maldivian men.
The
number of people living in Male' climbed from 39% to 41%. While Male's
population has now been recorded at a total 212,000, 31% of them live in
the suburb Hulhumale.
The most increase in population was also noted in Hulhumale which is 16%.
The
number of people living in islands other than the Greater Male' Area
were recorded at 46%, while 10% were found working in resort islands.
Other than Male' City, the most number of people were recorded in Addu City which has more than 25,000 people.
It was also noted that there are more than 40 islands with a population of less than 500 people.
