Islamic Minister rules out casinos, silent on prostitution

Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Zahir Ali today ruled out licensing casinos but remained silent on the issue of rampant prostitution in Maldives, according to local media reports.

Summoned before the Parliament, he said that gambling is prohibited in Islam and therefore, the government will not give permission to open casinos in the Maldives.

He said that pork and alcohol were legalized for foreigners on an earlier administration's decision based on the condition that Maldivians do not engage with the dealing in pork and alcohol - two things which are prohibited in the Islamic faith.

Some Maldivian newspapers alleged that Maldivians are involved in consuming alcohol. They also alleged that prostitution is now widespread in Maldives, and that it was carried out openly through advertising on social media and under the guise of massage parlors. One news website claimed that "there are now more massage parlors in (the capital) Male' than mosques".

The Islamic Minister is silent on some very important matters such as the issue of what to consume and what not to consume. For example, what's his verdict on the issue of rizq vs protected species? Recently some people were caught as they were about to cook and eat turtles which are endangered species. What does he have to say about whether Allah's rizq is finite or infinite, and therefore whether it is permissible to engage in sport fishing too?
