Letter to Hilath: Is Keanu's "loneliness" a problem?

Dear friend,

I am writing in regard with this meme, which did the rounds on Maldivian social media yesterday, where the popular actor Keanu Reeves is quoted as saying that he does not feel lonely, and that, he can enjoy life even if he remains single.

This claim seems to have launched a debate between Maldivian Liberals and Conservatives.

Liberals claim that Keanu is simply saying that one does not necessarily always need company in order to enjoy life. They state that Keanu has no discreet agenda in making such claims in public.

Conservatives, on the other hand, claim that this is Keanu's secret agenda to promote a decadent Western hedonistic lifestyle to corrupt the minds of religious right-leaning societies.

Taking the Conservative point into account, and with regard to our own Muslim Maldivian community, we have to take certain precautions when it comes to giving space to promote celebrities such as Keanu, as such notable icons have billions of fans worldwide, and they may be covertly involved in undermining small nations such as our country - Maldives.

Hence, from a certain faith-based perspective, the idea of singlehood is, in fact, a sensitive issue.

For example, let's consider the case that in our religion Islam, been married is highly recommended, and said to indicate a high level of "eemaan".

Then there is also concern among us Muslims that unmarried people will fall into the trap of been "married to their hands" (i.e. getting involved in masturbation).

Further, we Muslims believe that a person who is unmarried or single can easily fall into temptation, and thereby, become an unwilling victim of "ziney" (extra-marital sex or fornication).

Therefore, it could be construed that Keanu is directly or indirectly trying to promote an un-Islamic lifestyle and culture among the billions of fans and followers he has. But we don't know his reasons for engaging in such an ominous venture. It is scary indeed. Allah knows the best, and He would know what's in Keanu's heart.

Sincerely yours,

XX

  1. When Pizzeria was open at Alimas Carnival, I used to go there by myself just to enjoy the view of the sea up close when I enjoy a cuppa by myself. One day a friend saw me, came over, and said to me: "Hilath, why are you depressed?" I was baffled and asked him what made him think that, and his reply was: "Because you are sitting here all alone by yourself." πŸ˜…

I'm glad I got married. It's an experience one should have. Marriages don't last when people have too much unrealistic expectations about it.

A marriage can also be unconventional but successful when 2 people have a silent mutual understanding of how to get along. A marriage doesn't always have to be a textbook thing πŸ™‚

When Allah Wills 2 people who are so extremely different can make a marriage work. Marriage can sometimes be a long pleasant walk on an unknown road with a person who understands you or wants to be with you for unspoken reasons.

Sex is supposed to be a big part of marriage and it's common sense that some marriages are broken when it lacks sex. I can only say that there are twisted definitions of marriage that people aren't commonly familiar with or can expect that it would work.

Allah sends all human beings to Earth with "Rizq" ("provisions"), including their potential partner or partners. It's up to us to work towards finding such a partner and settling down with that partner. Allah will help only those who seeks His help and undertakes practical efforts to find all the rizq that Allah has provided for.

Rizq means provision. It includes everything that we have been provided with by Allah. While wealth is a form of provision, it is not the only form of rizq. Allah has provided us with many other forms of rizq. He provided us with external rizq like food, shelter, and clothing.
