We held the demonstration for secularism but President Yameen says it was for gay rights?!

President Yameen has implied that EU removed their concessions for importing fish products from the Maldives because the country does not have religious freedom and the right to have same sex marriages...

The incidences that Yameen was referring to include how a Maldivian, Mohamed Nazim, stated during a question and answer session of Nazik Naik's talk in the Maldives in 2009 that he was not a Muslim. However, Nazim took back his statement after Islamic scholars showed him the error of his ways and issued a public apology.

The other incident that Yameen referred to was how blogger and former journalism Hilath Rasheed had called for allowing same sex relationships at a rally he led near in Male'. While police had looked into this case, there have been no charges on this issue so far. Full story

  1. I don't even think any media made that mistake when reporting that story at the time. It was very clearly reported as a silent protest calling for religious freedom. But I guess that's not controversial enough for CNM.
